Terminology

Just like any sport, swimming comes with its own unique set of terms and jargon that might be unfamiliar to newcomers. In this guide, we'll provide explanations for common swimming terminology, from stroke techniques to meet procedures to help you navigate swim meets and practices.

Event: Ex. "8 & under Girls 25 Yard Freestyle" indicates the age group, distance, and stroke of the race.

Heat: During events, multiple swimmers participate in specific races. Each group, or heat, typically comprises 6-8 lanes.

Lane: A designated section of the pool marked for individual swimmers during races.

Seed Time: The swimmer's fastest recorded time prior to the current meet. It serves as a benchmark for seeding swimmers in their respective events, ensuring competitive matchups.

Finals Time: The time recorded by a swimmer during the current meet. This is the actual time achieved in the race or event.

Points: Points awarded to individual swimmers and teams based on their performances in various events. The allocation of points may vary depending on the meet's rules and scoring system.

Heat Sheet: A printed or digital document provided before swim meets, listing the schedule of events, heats, lanes, and participant names. Heat sheets enable swimmers and spectators to track race times and lane assignments throughout the swim meet.

Flip Turn: Employed during longer swims (50 yards or more) in freestyle and backstroke, the flip turn facilitates a seamless 180-degree directional change, utilizing momentum while underwater.

Relay: A team event involving four swimmers, with each participant swimming a designated distance. Relay races can be either Freestyle or Medley (comprising backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle, in that order).

Individual Medley (IM): In this event, swimmers complete all four strokes - butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle - in sequence. A 100 IM involves 25 yards of each stroke, while a 200 IM consists of 50 yards of each stroke. Swimmers must demonstrate proficiency in each stroke to compete in this event.

Disqualification (DQ): When a swimmer fails to adhere to the rules of a specific stroke or race, resulting in their disqualification from that event.
